How did you get into ceramics, and was it always your career goal?

When I had my first child all those years ago, I took a ceramics night class for a few months and never looked back. It’s been 13 years of making, 3 years as my brand Claybird.

“Write all your ideas down on a massive piece of paper.”

Starting your own business is a huge and often scary step! What is your advice to any girls interested in following their dreams in this way?

Write all your ideas down on a massive piece of paper. Get everything down, and add to it over a few weeks/months. Write a business plan – it will give you grounding and keep you focussed on goals and direction.

Tell us who your heroes are.

I don’t have heroes – I have parents. I look up to them still.

What music are you into at the moment?

At the moment I’m loving the acoustic soulful numbers by James Vincent McMorrow. [Editor’s note: check out McMorrow’s version of ‘Higher Love’, we adore.]

What do you love the most about your home country, New Zealand?

I love the beaches – I am always stealing a moment in my week to be at the beach even if its raining.

If you could dress in one label for the rest of your life, who would it be? And is there a jewellery label also?

I would dress in Twenty Seven Names – beautiful tailoring and NZ made! Jewellery – I wear a lot of my gal-pals work Love Winter. I could literally wear everything she makes, so talented!
